LearnHive Companion v1.0.15 · Free to use · Android 7.0 and up · AI + retrieval-augmented generation · daily practice · XP & streaks · built by LearnHive Labs · October 2026
Most students don’t need another app that asks for two uninterrupted hours. They need something that works in the ten minutes between classes, on the bus home, or during a break. That’s the idea behind LearnHive Companion, a free, research-driven study app. Version 1.0.15 adds its biggest upgrade yet: the LearnHive Knowledge Engine, an AI study agent that looks things up before it answers and shows you where each answer came from.
Ask about a real concept, get a worked example grounded in sources, and earn progress for showing up.
The problem with “just ask AI”
Fast and patient, but not always right.
AI chatbots are now part of how students study. They’re fast, available at 2 a.m., and never tired of the same question. But most students have hit the same wall: an answer that sounds confident and is simply wrong, or a “source” that doesn’t exist. For a student, that isn’t a small bug. A made-up fact in your notes becomes a wrong answer on your exam.
The Knowledge Engine was built to close that gap.
How the Knowledge Engine works
Look it up first. Answer second. Show your sources always.
The Knowledge Engine handles accuracy. The habit loop handles consistency. Your topics and progress connect the two.
1. Retrieve — look before you answer
Instead of answering only from what it absorbed during training, the engine first searches for reference material related to your question. This approach is called retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG.
2. Ground — keep the answer tied to evidence
The most relevant passages are handed to the AI along with your question, so the answer is built from real material, not guesswork.
3. Personalize — your topics, your level
The engine works with the topics you’ve chosen to study, so explanations stay focused on what matters to you, not a generic textbook tour.
4. Cite — see where it came from
Because the engine knows which material it used, it can show you its sources. You’re not just told something; you’re shown where to check it.
What the research says
“Research-driven” should mean something. Here’s what we built on.
Retrieval reduces made-up answers
Researchers widely see RAG as a promising way to reduce AI “hallucination,” because answers can be tied back to traceable sources. In conversational AI research, adding retrieval significantly reduced fabricated knowledge, especially on unfamiliar topics.
Well-designed AI tutors can boost learning
In a randomized study of 194 students in Harvard’s introductory physics course, students learned more than twice as much, in less time, with a custom AI tutor than in an active-learning classroom. The key was design: the tutor followed teaching best practices, like keeping replies short to avoid overload.
A little every day beats cramming
The spacing effect is one of the most reliable findings in learning science. A landmark review covered 839 assessments across 317 experiments, and a recent classroom meta-analysis found a moderate advantage for spaced practice over cramming. That’s why LearnHive is built around short daily sessions.
An honest note on AI. RAG reduces errors; it doesn’t eliminate them. A 2026 study of medical question-answering found that even with retrieval, citations don’t always fully support the claims they’re attached to. That’s why we treat citations as a starting point for your thinking, not a replacement for it. Tap the source, read it, and make the idea yours.
